Turquoise is one of the oldest stones and protection amulets that we know of today. It dates all the way back to the Egyptian times almost 6,000 years ago. This stone is said to protect the wearer from negative energy as well as serve as a stone of self-realization in helping you to better understand yourself, ideas, and emotions. Turquoise in some cultures is considered to be a symbol of wealth and friendship, brings good fortune and peace, and serves as a versatile, grounding power stone. Some of the healing powers this stone embodies is that it neutralizes over-acidity, alleviates stomach problems and viral infections, increases growth and muscular strength and contains anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects. By far, Turquoise is the most popular stone the Native Americans silversmith's use is their designs. For centuries, the most valuable turquoise came from Iran (Persia) but today some specimens mined in the southwestern United States compete with it.

The name "Persian Turquoise" is now generally used to refer to any turquoise stone that does not have the black or brown veining commonly found in turquoise mined in the United States and used in a style of jewelry created by the American Indians.

The Aztecs mined turquoise in an area now known as New Mexico and a significant amount of turquoise comes from Arizona, California and Nevada in the United States.
